Fit Squad opens Toronto’s first ever outdoor rooftop gym at Dundas Edward Centre
When the pandemic hit, gyms were hit hard with restrictions and closures, and over a year later, many still haven’t opened back up. Even with reopening on the horizon, limits on class sizes, social distancing and sanitation measures have made it difficult for gyms to operate. Earlier this month, as Toronto’s lockdown was lifted and moved into the initial stage of re-opening, our tenant Fit Squad located at 111 Peter Street still struggled to operate within the stringent COVID-19 guidelines.
Knowing the value of health and wellness, we were quick to work with our tenant on a solution to help them open safely and successfully. Through a collaborative effort, the idea of running a temporary pop-up location in another Crown space or building that could satisfy COVID-19 guidelines and allow the gym to run was explored. Upon looking at the various options available, the idea of utilizing the rooftop of the Dundas Edward Centre parkade was born.
Located within the same neighbourhood, the parking structure’s rooftop provided the ideal space for Fit Squad to operate. The 3,000 square foot gym is Toronto’s first open-air, rooftop fitness facility, which provides a unique fitness experience for both new and returning members alike. It is fully equipped with Fit Squad’s state-of-the-art equipment which allow for personal training, open gym training and small group classes – all in a safe and inspiring outdoor setting (with some unique views of the city!).
As an operating principle, at Crown we see buildings and the workspaces within them as more than square footage.
